Yesterday, it was 96° in Wilmington, and our building’s aging chiller — the core of our air conditioning system — couldn’t keep up. The unit is on its last legs and has little chance of getting us through another scorching summer.
We've already experienced periodic failures this month, forcing us to close parts of our building on the hottest days. When our AC goes down, it doesn’t just make our building uncomfortably warm — it hinders our ability to serve our neighbors effectively. If we don’t replace the chiller, we face the very real possibility of extended closures, which would be devastating.
To ensure our programs continue without interruption, today we're launching a campaign: the 60 Day Chiller Challenge. The goal? To raise $325,000, in sixty days, to upgrade our failing AC system. It's a big number, I know. But the alternative — having to close our doors when it gets too hot — is unthinkable.
Every time I see a toddler’s face light up, a teenager learning a new skill, or a family taking steps towards stability, I'm reminded of why our work matters. We can't let something like a 28-year-old chiller stand in the way of that impact.
So I'm asking you, our community — our partners in this vital work — to help us beat the heat and keep our building cool during the warmest months of the year.
Your support for this campaign ensures the continuity of our programs, regardless of the temperature outside. Together, I know we can rise to this challenge!
