COURSE DESCRIPTION

Welcome to Microsoft Excel 2016. This course covers the fundamental concepts of spreadsheet skills necessary to be successful within an organization. The emphasis is on technical knowledge and reinforcement of problem-solving abilities through project-based learning. This course prepares students for the Microsoft Office Specialist Excel certification.

GET STARTED

  1. Plan, design, and create spreadsheets using complex formulas and functions.
  2. Prepare and manage multiple-sheet workbooks.
  3. Create macros, macro buttons, and set security for macros.
  4. Summarize and analyze data.
  5. Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Plan, design, and create spreadsheets using complex formulas and functions.
    1. Identify, describe, and use logical, lookup, and financial functions.
    2. Select functions and formulas to calculate values.
    3. Create and maintain range names.
    4. Use range names in formulas.
    5. Choose correct cell address reference to enter formulas and functions.
    6. Develop a spreadsheet using templates.
  2. Prepare and manage multiple-sheet workbooks.
    1. Import and export data to and from an external source such as an Access database or a text file.
    2. Export and publish spreadsheets to external applications such as portable document format (PDF) or webpage.
    3. Use the password protection feature to ensure the confidentiality of a workbook.
    4. Group and ungroup worksheets.
    5. Use the consolidate data function.
  3. Create macros, macro buttons, and set security for macros.
    1. Create and demonstrate proper use of macros.
    2. Use macros to automate a spreadsheet.
    3. Evaluate, assess, and edit macros.
    4. Develop worksheet templates using macros.
    5. Use the macro recorder feature.
    6. Use relative reference in macro.
  4. Summarize and analyze data.
    1. Manage large workbooks using advanced sorting and filtering.
    2. Create, modify, and format a pivot table.
    3. Filter and slice a pivot table.
    4. Use PowerPivot functionality to import data from multiple data sources.
    5. Create and customize a pivot chart.
  5. Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
    1. Collaborate with peers to identify worksheet errors and circular references.
    2. Modify formulas to eliminate circular references.
    3. Create and edit professional-looking charts to present data.
    4. Create one and two-variable data tables.
    5. Set up substitution values, and add formulas to data tables.

Professor Kennedy’s diverse career includes over 25 years as a Vice President for the fixed income and equities (domestic & international) desk at JP Morgan Chase Bank.

Professor Kennedy is a PMI certified project management professional (PMP) with expertise in managing technology, process improvement, infrastructure, and international development projects.

Professor Kennedy holds an Associate Degree in Finance, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance, a Masters of Business Administration in Finance where he graduated cum laude, and a Masters of Business Administration in Management Information Systems.
